Cash for Cars vs Selling Privately: Which Is Actually Better?

When it comes time to get rid of a car, you have basically got two roads. List it privately on Trade Me or Facebook Marketplace and try to find a buyer, or ring a cash-for-cars service and have it gone by the end of the day.

We are obviously one of those cash-for-cars services, so you would expect us to tell you our way is always best. We are not going to do that, because it is not true. For some cars, selling privately genuinely gets you more. For others, it is a waste of weeks of your life. Here is the honest comparison so you can pick the right one for your situation.

Selling privately: more money, more hassle

Let us be fair to the private sale first. If your car is tidy, runs well, has a current WOF and rego, and is a desirable make and model, selling it privately will usually get you the most money. You are selling straight to another driver, so there is no middleman taking a margin.

That is the upside, and it is a real one. But here is what people forget to factor in.

Time. A private sale in New Zealand commonly takes anywhere from a couple of weeks to well over a month. That is a while to have your car in limbo, still registered and insured in your name.

The tyre kickers. Anyone who has sold on Marketplace knows the drill. Endless "is this still available?" messages that go nowhere. People who agree to view it and never show. Lowball offers from people who have not even seen the car.

Strangers at your house. You are letting people you do not know come to your home and test drive your car. Most are fine. It is still something to think about, especially if you are selling on your own.

The admin. You handle the NZTA ownership transfer yourself, and if there is finance owing on the car, you have to sort that before you can sell.

So the extra money from a private sale is real, but it is not free. You are paying for it with your time, effort, and a fair bit of hassle. The question is whether that trade is worth it for your car.

Cash for cars: less money, no hassle

Now our side, honestly. Going with a cash-for-cars service will generally get you a fair market price, not the top retail number you might squeeze from the perfect private buyer. We are upfront about that.

What you get in return is everything the private sale costs you:

It is fast. Often same day. Quote in the morning, car gone by the afternoon, cash in hand.

No buyers to deal with. No listings, no messages, no no-shows, no strangers, no negotiating. One quote, one pickup, done.

We come to you. You do not need to get the car anywhere, or even get it running. Dead, damaged, no WOF, no rego, does not matter.

The paperwork is handled. We sort the NZTA disposal side at pickup, so your name comes off the car then and there.

So which should you choose?

Here is the honest rule of thumb.

Sell privately if your car is in good nick, runs well, has a current WOF and rego, is a popular model, and you have got the time and patience to manage the sale. The extra money is worth the effort when the car is genuinely desirable.

Go cash for cars if your car is old, damaged, high-mileage, not running, or has no WOF or rego. Nobody on Marketplace wants a project car, so you will get lowballed and messed around, and the small price difference is not worth weeks of hassle. Same goes if you simply value your time and want it gone now with zero fuss, even on a tidy car.

Put simply: the nicer and more roadworthy the car, the more a private sale makes sense. The older, deader or more damaged it is, the more a cash-for-cars service is the smarter, easier, and often better-value choice once you count the hassle.

The honest bottom line

There is no single right answer, it depends on your car and how much your time is worth to you. We are not going to pretend a private sale is always a bad idea, because for the right car it is not.

But if your car is past its best, or you just want it dealt with without the Marketplace circus, that is exactly what we are here for. Get in touch or grab a free quote, tell us what you have got, and we will give you a fair number. If it works for you, it could be gone today.
